After check in, we spent as much time as we could with mom before going through the security checkpoint, which the boys thought was a hoot. (Go figure - parents always think it's going to be traumatic and the kids think it is a game - like being a spy). We made a quick stop for candy (mom approved) and bottled water for the trip and found our gate.
We boarded and found our seats without incident and after getting settled I texted mom that we were on board and texted dad our arrival time. I arranged for the older boy to get a headset and he settled down quickly. The younger one had brought some cards and we played UNO and RAGE for awhile. I had brought my bag of goodies and was able to keep the younger one entertained until time to land.
We gathered all of our things, made it down to the baggage area where a super excited dad was waiting to scoop his brood into his arms. Dad kept thanking me and thanking me - if it weren't for you, he said. I wouldn't have been able to get my boys for another 3 weeks and I've missed them so much!
I can't tell you how good it felt to see that happy family. I called the boys' mother told her we were safe and sound and the boys used the video skype on my phone so mom could see that they were well and happy. You could see the relief in her face. As a former single mom, I know how terrifying it can be to let your little ones out of your sight and I'm glad that I could be of service to this family. I gave the boys a hug and bid goodbye to the father. We had arranged another trip - in reverse - in 6 weeks, so I could return the kids to mom. So I told everyone I'd see them later and grabbed a taxi to my lodging.
I could have just scheduled a return flight on the same day, but I decided a few days vacation in a new town, was just what the doctor ordered. I used AIRBNB to find a lovely private guesthouse for only $75 per night, which was even nicer than I expected and the hosts were superb!
All in all I had a lovely time and when I book my flight to pick up the boys, I think I might just get there a few days early - because my time there was just way too short.
