As I start out on another life adventure, documented in this blog, I tried to define my love of travel...and I came to the conclusion that it is not the travel itself, but the adventure that I crave, but then I needed to define adventure. Because it's not that I do many death defying acts while traveling...but what keeps me wandering, year after year are the facts that I am as fascinated by discovering a new insect crawling down the street as I am jumping out of a plane. It is the wonder and discovery that I crave, it's the awe I feel equally when looking at a beautiful sunset or a massive cathedral; the giddiness I feel when I bite into a fruit that I know my friends at home have never even heard of; the sense of pride I feel when my plans are delayed and I easily curl myself around a good book on the airport floor.
I found the following quote that is more eloquent, but appropriate just the same...
“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” – Mark Jenkins
