
For those of us to whom the word hostel conjours up memories of smelly, sometimes dirty, always crowded rooms full of young overly hairy backpacking young vagabonds of the '70's (oh yes, that was me), then I have a treat for you.

1. La Buena Vida - Mexico City
Starting at only $25, you can stay here in the heart of Mexico City, in either a 4,6, or 8 bed dorm with linens, towels, continental breakfast buffet and free wi-fi in your room. It also has a restaurant and bar, a computer/TV lounge and a solarium!
2. Centric Point Hotel - Barcelona, Spain
e Centric Point Hotel is a large (400 bed) modern and completely renovated high quality hostel in the best location of Barcelona. The hotel features free broadband internet access and the budget minded traveler can start the day with a free continental breakfast, and check out the travel desk to book city tours and expeditions.
3. The Matchbox - Singapore
If you are anywhere near this place, you have to stay, if just for the sheer uniqueness of it. This pod hostel has breakfast available all day, along with wi-fi, laundry, linen & towels. Also you can get a cardio workout and a foot massage - FREE!!
4. Wombats City Hostel at The Naschmarkt, Vienna
Clear, clean minimalistic lines, the Wombats chain of hostels are well known for their hospitality, safety and design. Take advantage of the free tourist information, wi-fi access, laundry, wheelchair friendly rooms, luggage storage, and security lockers. Offering both dorms and private rooms for under $40 per night is a real bargain.
Stayokay Hostel - Rotterdam
Last, but certainly no least is the Stayokay Hostel. A uniquely designed pod type building with dorms, but also private rooms and private baths. You may not want to leave your comfortable room, but when you do there is storage for your luggage, safes and bicycle rentals. This hostel is also set up for groups and conference areas.
Today's backpackers are not the old hippie students of yore, but dollar conscious students, frugal families, hip high techies and even savvy seniors. By creating fun, lively spaces with lots of color and clean lines, these hostels are sure to help budget minded travelers have a wonderful experience. Look to see more of these boutique type hostels in the future, catering to the expanding market.
